The Board's Chairperson - Gary Brown

Ka nui mihi kia koutou katoa. Greetings to you all.

May I extend a very warm welcome to the school albeit in an electronic format. Havelock School enjoys a tradition of helping its students learn for life.

From its earliest times students have moved beyond Havelock into an increasingly complex world. Today students are still encouraged to look beyond the immediate but with a hand firmly on the present.

The school's General Goals are:

1 To promote learning as a life-long process.

2 That the community, trustees, parents, staff and pupils work together in a team effort.

3 To provide equal opportunities for all students where positive success is achieved for all.

4 To promote learning for personal development as well as academic attainment.

We believe that our school should be an enjoyable place in which to work, where every person is valued and has self-respect. We encourage students to become responsibly involved in the activities of the school and develop an awareness of, and show consideration for, the needs and well-being of others. While we recognise that learning is a life-long process and that Havelock School plays only a part, it is of primary importance in the development of our young people. Therefore, we seek to involve our students, their parents and the community in this process. An open-door policy exists and we invite regular contact with us about your child's progress.

The ultimate control of the school, including staff, students, grounds, buildings, equipment, finance and overall administration is vested in the Board of Trustees, and managed by the principal. Students are admitted under the terms of the 1989 Education Act and its Amendments.

Trustees are nominated and elected by the parents of students. The board comprises five members elected by parents and guardians (not necessarily parents of students), the principal and one staff member elected by staff. Two further members may be co-opted for a specific purpose, expertise or time frame by the board.

Two board meetings a term are held and usually fall on a Monday evening. The actual dates are advertised in the school’s newsletter. The venue is usually a classroom with a start time of 19:00. Parents and members of the public are very welcome to attend but are reminded that these are meetings held in public, not public meetings.

I wish you and your family a worthwhile and enjoyable relationship with the school, a school established by the Havelock community in 1861 for the education of its youngsters.
