The school district covers two main areas: Havelock Township and the Kaituna Valley, often referred to as Havelock Suburban. Families in the area are involved in a range of industries including aquaculture, farming, forestry, tourism, and related service sectors.
A large proportion of our residents are retired or semi-retired, many of whom are drawn to Havelock for its picturesque seaside landscape and relaxed lifestyle. At the same time, new families are choosing to settle here, adding to the vibrancy of our community.
Our school enjoys strong support from the community, with locals following school events closely and, in turn, the school actively supporting community activities. Students benefit from a safe and caring environment, supported by local services including police, ambulance, fire brigade, and a medical center.
Havelock has a number of sports and recreation opportunities, with rugby, netball, and bowling clubs particularly well supported. Service organisations such as the Havelock Community Association, Lions, St John, the Museum Society, Pelorus Community Pre-School, and several churches also reflect the active and diverse nature of the wider community.
The makeup of our school community is increasingly diverse. Close to half of our students identify as Māori, descending from 12 different iwi, with Ngāpuhi being the most prominent. We also have a growing Pacific Island community, whose cultures further enrich our school life. Our local marae is Ngāti Kuia, while our school land is owned by Te Ātiawa. We are fortunate that whānau and iwi representatives willingly share their skills, knowledge, and culture with the school.
Most of our students come from families where both parents are busy with work commitments. Even so, a small number of parents generously give their time to support the school, particularly with EOTC events, helping to ensure our children have rich learning opportunities. We are also fortunate to have a small but dedicated group of parent volunteers, the Friends of Havelock School, who lead our fundraising efforts. Their commitment, along with the wider support of our community, helps provide valuable resources and experiences for our students.
